Great Companies That Started In A Garage

Great Companies That Started In A Garage

You might see your garage as a boring, dark, and crowded space, but there have been many entrepreneurs that have seen it for more than that and have made a garage into their original office/workspace. Some of these companies are now worth billions of pounds and their time using garages has long passed.

Amazon

Amazon started their venture in 1994 selling books from the garage of founder Jeff Bezos. He sold his first book in 1995 from his garage and the rest is considered history. Amazon is now one of the largest online merchants and has large distribution centres all over the world. They’re considered the most trusted online retailer, all started from a garage in Seattle, Washington.

Apple

Known now as one of the most innovative technology companies in the world. Founded by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak in Steve Job’s parent’s garage, they built their first computer and another 29 in that very garage. They’re also known for bringing to light the computer mouse, which has revolutionised the way computers work. Today the company still produces high quality electronics, including their best-selling mobile phones.

Google

Unless you’ve never used a computer before then there is a 100% chance that you have been on Google. The search engine is responsible for directing the internet’s traffic and today owns YouTube and whole load of technology companies, some that produce innovative electronics such as robots. This all started from a friend of the founder’s garage. Larry Page and Sergey Brin created the most visited internet website in history from a garage in California.

Microsoft

Bill Gates and Paul Allen founded Microsoft in their garage in 1975. It is now one of the wealthiest companies in the world and its main founder Bill Gates is one of the richest people in the world. They started creating computer operating systems in their garage and have since become wildly successful. Microsoft has over 90% market share of operating systems for computers and now produces phones, tablets and they also produce games consoles.

Lotus Cars

Founded in 1952 in the garage of Anthony Colin Bruce Chapman’s father, Lotus established itself as one of the most successful car production companies. To this date some of the cars that were produced by Lotus are the most sought after cars, fetching crazy sums of money at auctions. The company won the Formula One World Championship seven times during its best years.

Disney

When you think of Disney you think of the magical animations and possibly the theme parks. It’s very difficult to have never seen any sort of Disney animation as they’re huge. Originally started from a garage not even big enough to store a car, Walt Disney started creating some of the magical characters such as Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck. Now, Disney is one of the biggest companies in the world and produces hit animations almost yearly.

Harley Davidson

One of the most well-known motorcycle companies, it was started in the garage of Henry Melk, friend to William Harley and Arthur Davidson. They started creating their first bike in 1903 and quickly realised that it wasn’t sufficient to travel around the hills of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The company is one of two major motorcycle companies to have survived the Great Depression. Today, the motorcycles are very highly loved and sought after and you will have seen one of their motorcycles driving around.
